Cripple Horse Update

So it's been a month or so since I updated you on my cripplehorse herd. Unfortunately, it's not much better. We got our vetbill yesterday and they literally had to put extra postage onit.

Deuce:
Turns out he's got a stress fracture on his splint bone. He's beengel casted for three weeks now and has three more to go on stallrest until we do another round of X-rays to see if it healed. He'sconvalescing OK, but at times has gotten a little piggish about hisfeed.

Turkey:
After blocking his coffin joint, he blocked sound. Good news, wethought. So we injected the joint. He's sound in a straight lineand to the left, but head bobbin' lame to the right. Probably meanssoft tissue damage-a torn ligament. He gets turned out for 6-12months for a possible recovery. It's also likely that he'll neverrecover. Big bummer.

Tuff:
The only bright spot in the whole deal. We finally figured all theright places to inject and the right treatments for his navicularand he's been very sound. My wife rode him two days in the pasturewith me (I was on borrowed horses) and heeled a couple steers, thenrode him at a ranch rodeo and he seems to have held up through itall.

Frank: The 28-year-old kids horse is sound as a pound.
Don't know where we'll go from here for sure, I've just got to getthrough the fall works (shipping, weaning and preg checking) theneverything can recuperate through the winter.

LOL "Cripple Horse Herd" caught my eye! I have the same herd! About three months ago I made the decision (after extensive research) to have all my horses (11) go barefoot, and got a natural hoof trimmer. Subsequently a myriad of issues keep cropping up; laminitis, white line disease; deep thrush, lameness. I've soaked in Clean Trax, hand walked "patients" in Equicast, had neon blue rubber stuff (forgot the name) pour into the soles; built a large turn-out, had hay analyzed, cut out supplements with any trace of sugar, soaked hay, x-rays and blood work; vinegar soaks, kinesiologist analysis....and I'm going crazy and broke. Glad to see I'm not the only one....misery loves company. LOL!! i.e. you're not alone!

I have a horse that may have navicular pain issues and I am curious what tests were done or how you determined where to do injections. Also, what other treatments you may be doing. I am currently managing with corrective shoeing but may need additional treatments at some point. Thanks for any helpful information you can provide.

We worked with our vet to determine the injections by doing X-rays and blocking his joints. Starting low and working our way up the leg. In addition to navicular pain, he had some arthritis in his knee and injected there. We also injected his coffin joint. Also, we've got him on Legend. Specifically for the navicular he's also on Isoxsuprine and he's got egg bar shoes. Seems like a lot, but it seems to be working.

Bob, sometimes I forget to count my blessings and you just reminded me. I did what no one contemplating getting a horse should do, and got my little Morab mare from an older couple who couldn't handle her, sight unseen. She goes barefoot, and nothing ever seems to throw her. Of course she's not a competition horse but when I think of everything that could've been wrong with her I still can't believe I did it. I hope your guys heal up for you and Turkey might suprise you. At least I hope so.

I feel your pain...my 6 yr. old Morgan has been unsound for about 6 mo. and
I've spent a couple thousand so far to the vets...but he's still off somewhat.
Don't know which way to go from here. The vets have lots of expensive
equipment but still can't figure out the cause of his lameness!!! I'm very
disappointed thus far.

I have a horse that I believe has navicular. What treatments did you use for navicular? I am thinking about putting pads on to see if that helps. Any suggestions would be appriciated. Thanks

Best thing I found for Navicular is take the shoes off, trim him so he is level, trim him every 5 weeks to keep him level, and put him out to pasture to see if Mother Nature will heal him. I have done the fancy shoes, pads, drugs (lots and lots of drugs), vets to the point of near bankruptcy, and found the above to work the best to help my horse.

I, too, feel your pain. Here's my "cripple list". Cody-low ringbone(periarticular). Right now, shoes keep him sounder than not unless his arthritic stifles or hocks act up. Shiloh-Cushings Disease with associated bouts of laminitis. So far so good with the new farrier but, just when you take a deep breath--well, you know. Comet-sound as the dollar used to be. Let's hear it for the Mustangs!

I have just one horse, my pal Ace. Sound going straight or to the left as well. His problem is the lack of space in the joint capsule between the bones of the right front fetlock and pastern, with a calcified ligament to boot. X rays show absolutely NO arthritis at all for this 17yo, but I certainly feel your pain when it comes to the vet bills. The Adequan and Legend injections and now Cetyl M supplements.....I know he is worth it, but my pocket book is screaming.
